08.13.07 -- REPORT: Qualifying begins Monday
By CHER PHILLIPS
The qualifying period to run for council or mayor begins on Monday, Aug. 13 and ends Friday Aug. 17 at noon.
Residents interested in running for town council or mayor should pick up a packet from the town office.
At least two officials said last Thursday they would be vacating their seats.
Mayor Marsha Strange will not run again. She's served 26 years in the office of mayor, although some of her terms were no consecutive.
Town councilwoman Eunice Smith will also not run again. Smith, 90, served as town clerk for 12 and a half years before she began her 16-year stint on the council.
"Twenty-eight and a half years are enough," Smith said.
The other two seats up for election are held by Council Vice President Howard Walkup and Councilman Lee Deaderick.
Walkup was not at last week's meeting. But Deaderick said he would "most likely" run again for council. Both Deaderick and Walkup ran unopposed for seats vacated by resigning council members last year, which means they were the only ones to apply to run during the qualification periods last year.
This will be the only qualification period for the November 2007 election. These open seats all have terms of four years. To be eligible to run, residents must have lived in McIntosh two consecutive years. To run candidates will complete a packet, including gathering some signatures from other McIntosh residents supporting their campaign for public office. To read more about how the offices work, check out the McIntosh Town Charter.

I'm Cher From McIntosh, FL I'm a graduate student at the University of Florida working on a master's degree in Mass Communication. While I was finishing my undergrad degree in journalism last year, I reported on McIntosh, Fla. for an in-depth reporting class. I figured that the reporting and the public record files should go somewhere people can access them. Reporters don't report to keep the information they find to themselves. Some of that reporting is included here in a forum that allows response. McIntosh suffers because with no news coverage, the local government and the rumor mill have too much potential to run rampant over residents. I moved to McIntosh in the fall of 1999. My profile
